  • Old Gold, New Love Story: The Rise of Personalised Handmade Wedding Rings

    Jun 19, 2026

One of the most common things I hear from couples during our initial design consultation is:

"Surely we don't have enough gold for two rings?"

Most people are amazed by how much gold is sitting unworn in jewellery boxes and just how far it can go when transformed into handmade wedding rings.

Over the last few years, I've noticed a growing number of couples choosing to use their own family gold when creating their wedding bands. I think this reflects a wider interest in sustainability and knowing where the materials in our jewellery come from, much like the ongoing natural versus lab-grown diamond debate.

But there is another reason too: meaning.

Weddings can be all-consuming, and planning one often involves a great deal of spending. Your wedding rings, however, are one of the very few parts of the day that stay with you physically for the rest of your life. By incorporating family gold into your rings, they become more than jewellery, they become storytellers.

Often, a parent or grandparent will gift old jewellery for the couple to use. It's a lovely gesture that creates a tangible connection between generations and can spark conversations and memories for years to come.

There is also a practical benefit. On average, couples who use their own gold save around £600 at Madeleine Holloway Jewellery compared to having rings made entirely from new materials. Of course, this varies depending on the design, the amount of gold available, and whether additional gemstones or metal are required, but it can make a significant difference to a wedding budget.

You Probably Have More Gold Than You Think

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need a large amount of gold to create wedding rings. The reality is often quite the opposite.

Your gold doesn't need to come in the form of a neatly cast ingot. A collection of old jewellery can be just as valuable. Broken chains, single earrings, damaged rings, and unworn pieces can all contribute to the final result.

In fact, I often enjoy working with a mixture of different gold items because it can create a unique colour and character that makes the finished rings even more personal.

My husband and I used his grandfather's gold to make our own wedding rings. The original gold had a rich red tone, as they were 9ct red gold wedding bands. I added a small amount of 18ct yellow gold to increase the volume of material available. The finished rings had a beautiful warm blush colour that allowed the character of the original gold to shine through.

The biggest surprise for many clients isn't whether they have enough gold, it's discovering they often have more than they need. In this case this can reduce the cost further as Madeleine can make something else or deduct more from the overall cost.

The Journey from Old Jewellery to Handmade Wedding Rings

Every project is different, but the process generally follows these steps:

    1. Assessing the jewellery and discussing design ideas.
    2. Testing and identifying the gold purity.
    3. Melting and refining the metal.
    4. Creating a suitable alloy if required.
    5. Handcrafting the rings.
    6. Finishing, polishing, and hallmarking.

Watching a collection of sentimental but unworn jewellery transform into a pair of wedding rings is one of the most rewarding parts of my job, I love it!

    Is My Gold Suitable?

Many people worry that their gold won't be suitable, but it is rarely a problem.

If jewellery contains gemstones, they can often be removed and either returned to you or incorporated into the new design. If a piece is gold-plated or contains non-precious metals, this is quickly identified during testing, and we can discuss the available options.

Occasionally, very old gold needs to be mixed with a small amount of fresh metal to improve durability and workability, but this is perfectly normal and doesn't diminish the sentimental value of the piece.

Most importantly, don't be embarrassed to ask. Customers are often surprised by what can be used, and the outcome is almost always more positive than they expected.

A Piece of the Past, Reshaped for the Future

Handmade wedding rings are already unique. When they're crafted from gold that has been part of your family's story, they become something even more special.

Whether it's a great Aunt’s signet ring, a mother's broken chain, or a collection of inherited jewellery tucked away in a drawer, those pieces can begin a new chapter and become part of your own love story.
